Our context today is very important.

Starting with about verse 26 - we have a group of people having an argument about something “churchy” (ceremonial washing). They go see John the Baptist for answers.

While meeting with John the Baptist, they ask him… Hey what’s the deal… That guy you baptized the other day is taking over.. How does that make you feel?

They asked because John had been the leading local figure in street preaching and baptizing.

Johns answer shows no jealousy and sheds light on Jesus Divinity. He claims the role as best man in a wedding and says his joy is full by helping the rightful ‘bridegroom’ get together with his bride.

Can we say that as we help people connect to Jesus? Is it a bit heady at first when we gain some notoriety as experts? Is it gratifying when they come to us for answers about “churchy” things? Can we shrink out of the spotlight and point them to their own authentic relationship with Jesus?
