Galatians 6:1-5 (New International Version):
Doing Good to All
1Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, 5for each one should carry his own load.
Default reading link is to BibleGateway.com in the NIV. There are links to commentary and related passages found after you click through to read the chapter. Remember, devotions are the short things we read and reflect upon. Study happens when we dig deeper, read commentary, and related passages. For this reason, our study links bring up the entire chapter instead of just the verse suggested.

Galatians Ch 6 in the NIV begins with a caption that says “Doing Good To All”. However the text this refers to does not really start until verse 9.
The part given to us to study today is a simple but deep lesson in Christian community. Be gentle when confronting those in sin. I think we are called to go to where they are and love them back into community, rather than call out to them from the “safe zone” of our Christian Community. What am I talking about? The text says to “Watch yourself, lest you be tempted”. You would not be tempted if you stayed at church and prayed for a brother in sin. So, to me, this means, if you have to go to a bar to try to restore a brother, or to the gambling hall, or to the halls of politics, or wherever his sin has taken him, you need to GO. Also note, you cannot carry the burdens of another from afar. You need to walk with them if you will truly carry their burdens. However, we are warned in the end, to avoid pride over what we do. Do not compare your actions to those of others. Each of us has our own calling and should measure ourselves according to how well we perform our own work.
Another verse I am reminded of, regarding going to the sinner instead of staying in our comfort zone: “Crash the gates of hell and bring back captives”. But I cannot locate it today. Update soon.
