Default reading link is to BibleGateway.com in the NIV.  There are links to commentary and related passages found after you click through to read the chapter.   Remember, devotions are the short things we read and reflect upon. Study happens when we dig deeper, read commentary, and related passages.  For this reason, our study links bring up the entire chapter instead of just the verse suggested.

Please share that you studied, or your response to the study - in the blog at www.e4God.com or see our full 21 Day study plan at www.e4God.com/58

A classic set of rules for living. Many Christians think they know these. How did God choose the top 10? Do you wonder? I mean, the first two make sense. He is God after all. But how did the others rank?

The wisdom of these rules for living is obvious if you spend much time thinking about them.

They probably seem like fairly simple rules. Right? WRONG! These rules for living run VERY deep! It has often been said by the best trained legal minds, and government servants, world wide, that these simple rules actually form the most succinctly written guidelines ever put together for peaceful life in any community.

Many courthouses and governments refer refer to these commandments. They form the basis of law in almost every country and government in almost every time.

Without these rules, a group of people may self destruct over the arguments that erupt. Or the man with the biggest stick wins all arguments - even if he did steal his neighbors wife or ox.

With these rules a group of people may live in peace with each other (or suffer consequences of group censure, even expulsion or death).

These rules stand the test of time.

Finally, there is only one set of rules that are visited twice. Verses 3 and 4 are echoed in verse 23.

Repetition in the Bible is for emphasis. God meant it when he urged us to have no other Gods. And he was especially concerned that we not make gods of Silver and gold. Hmmm…..

Have we? Have I? Have you? What can we do about it?
